🚨 Your insurance company denied your medical care. Now what?

Before you assume “denied” means NO, know this:

📊 67% of appealed Medicare Advantage prior authorization denials were overturned.
📊 For ACA Marketplace plans, about 43% of appealed denials were overturned.

Yet most people never appeal.

If you receive a denial, ask WHY. Does your doctor need to submit more information? Can they resubmit it? Can you appeal?

And now AI is entering the fight, too. 🤖 Epic says technology it’s developing could eventually help healthcare providers resubmit denied claims.

A denial does not necessarily mean the conversation is over.

💬 Have you ever successfully appealed an insurance denial?

Save this and share it with someone who may need it.

ACA health insurance too expensive? You may have other options—but you need to understand what you’re buying. 👇

Depending on your situation, you may hear about:

✔️ Short-term medical insurance
✔️ Hospital indemnity insurance
✔️ Medical cost sharing, such as Sedera
✔️ Direct Primary Care (DPC)

They are NOT all the same thing, and some are not health insurance at all.

I also like exploring DPC alongside certain coverage strategies because it can provide predictable access to everyday primary care while you separately address larger medical risks.

The question isn’t just: “What’s the cheapest option?”

Ask: What does it cover? What doesn’t it cover? And what financial risk am I taking on?

Sometimes ACA is still the best choice. Sometimes there are other solutions worth exploring.

💾 SAVE this Reel for when you’re comparing health coverage.

“I just can’t afford this ACA premium. What else can I do?”

I’m having this conversation more and more.

Yes, there are alternatives — but cheaper does not mean equivalent, and these options are NOT the same as ACA-compliant major medical coverage.

We may look at:
• Short-term medical insurance
• Hospital indemnity coverage
• Medical cost sharing, such as Sedera
• Direct Primary Care (DPC)

I especially like exploring how DPC can fit into the conversation because it can provide predictable access to routine primary care for a monthly membership fee. But DPC is not health insurance, either.

The right solution depends on your health, prescriptions, budget, eligibility and how much financial risk you can comfortably take on.

Sometimes ACA coverage is still the best answer. Sometimes an alternative may make sense.

The important part? Know what you’re buying before you need to use it.

Know what it covers. Know what it doesn’t. Know your financial exposure.

💜 MEDICARE MYTH MONDAY

MYTH: “Once I enroll in Medicare, I can’t use my HSA anymore.”

❌ False!

There’s an important difference between contributing to an HSA and using the money you’ve already saved.

Once you’re enrolled in Medicare, you generally can no longer contribute to an HSA. However, the money already in your account remains yours and can continue to be used tax-free for qualified medical expenses.

After age 65, that can also include certain Medicare premiums, such as Medicare Part B, Part D and Medicare Advantage premiums.

One important exception: Medicare Supplement (Medigap) premiums generally don’t qualify.

If you’re approaching 65 and still contributing to an HSA, planning ahead is important because Medicare Part A can sometimes be retroactive.

📅 Open Enrollment is almost here — and now is the time to get it on your calendar.

If you’re on Medicare, turning 65, or getting your health insurance through the ACA Marketplace, these are two important enrollment periods to know:

🩺 Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15–December 7
💻 ACA Marketplace Open Enrollment: Begins November 1

I’m already preparing for my busiest season of the year and booking Medicare appointments beginning October 1 so we have time to review your current coverage and prepare for the upcoming plan year.

My job isn’t simply to show you a plan. It’s to help you understand your options, ask the right questions, and make an informed decision about your coverage.

Know someone who is turning 65, already on Medicare, or buys their own health insurance? Save this post and send it to them. 💜

Is Costco getting into Medicare? Yes — kind of.

Costco and SCAN Health Plan have announced a partnership to develop Costco-branded Medicare products for older adults.

SCAN stands for Senior Care Action Network, and its history goes back to 1977, when seniors came together around the idea of helping older adults remain healthy and independent.

The companies are planning jointly branded Medicare Advantage products in two states and a Medicare Supplement product in a third state, subject to regulatory approval.

The big question: Which states?

Those states have not been publicly announced yet.

As an independent health insurance agent, I’ll be watching closely as more information becomes available.

And remember: whether it’s Costco, SCAN or another company, don’t choose Medicare coverage based on the brand name alone. Doctors, prescriptions, networks, pharmacies, hospitals, benefits and costs can all matter.

🚨 If you’ve ever used MyChart, you need to hear this.

The Federal Trade Commission is reportedly investigating Epic Systems — the company behind MyChart — over potential antitrust issues involving access to healthcare data.

And this matters to everyday patients.

Your medical records may need to follow you from your primary care doctor → a specialist → a hospital → or even to another state.

Important: An investigation does NOT mean Epic has been found guilty of wrongdoing. Epic says it does not engage in anticompetitive behavior and that healthcare organizations ultimately control access to their patient records.

But when questions are being raised about access to healthcare information used across a system serving hundreds of millions of Americans, it’s something I’m paying attention to.

Because healthcare news eventually becomes your healthcare.

🧠 Caring for someone with dementia? There’s a Medicare program you may not know about.

It’s called GUIDE — Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience, and it’s designed to support not only people living with dementia, but their caregivers too.

Depending on eligibility and the participating organization, GUIDE may provide:

• Care coordination and a care navigator
• Caregiver education and support
• 24/7 access to help
• Connections to community resources
• Potential respite care for eligible participants

Because I’m in Columbia, South Carolina, I wanted to know: Where can families near us actually find this?

I checked the CMS GUIDE locations and found participating options through MUSC in the Charleston area, as well as the Steward Center for Palliative Care in Savannah, Georgia.

⚠️ Important: GUIDE has specific Medicare eligibility requirements, including rules involving Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage and PACE. Please do not change someone’s Medicare coverage simply to access this program. Check eligibility first.
