🚗🔐 Motor Vehicle Theft: Are You Doing Enough to Protect Your Vehicle?
Vehicle theft isn’t just something that happens to other people — and recent Australian insurance claims data shows why it’s worth taking vehicle security seriously.
According to the latest Insurance Statistics Australia data analysed by the Insurance Council of Australia, there were around 29,000 motor vehicle theft claims nationally in 2025, with total incurred insurance costs of approximately $485 million.
Victoria stands out in particular. In 2025, Victorian motor theft claims increased by 25%, with incurred costs rising 37% to around $243 million across more than 12,500 claims. That was higher than the combined total of the other states analysed.
And it’s not only complete vehicle theft we need to think about. ABS data shows that in 2024–25 an estimated 64,400 Australian households experienced motor vehicle theft, while 236,500 experienced theft from a motor vehicle.
🛡️ Simple steps to help protect your vehicle:
✅ Always lock your vehicle — even for short periods
✅ Never leave keys or valuables visible inside
✅ Park in a secure, well-lit location where possible
✅ Consider additional security devices such as a steering lock or approved tracking system
✅ Keep your keys secure at home and away from doors/windows
✅ Check whether your vehicle has manufacturer security or immobiliser updates available
✅ If your vehicle is stolen, contact police and your insurer as soon as possible
A good security routine can help reduce your risk — but having the right insurance protection is just as important.
