China’s latest US farm buying pledge is aimed at helping make farmers great again.

Just not necessarily Australian farmers.

The headline is US$17b per year, plus a separate soybean commitment that could add around another US$10b if China follows through.

The real issue is managed trade. If China starts buying to satisfy Washington, rather than purely on price, freight, quality and availability, Australian exporters could get squeezed.

I’ve written more on what this means for Australian agriculture.

This week on Ag Watchers, we’re joined by Shannon Beattie from Bush and Beyond Media for a great chat about agricultural communications, storytelling and the changing media landscape.

We talk about the difference between communications and marketing, how to make complex agricultural information easier to understand, why authenticity matters, and why chasing viral content is not always the answer.

A useful listen for agribusiness professionals, researchers, industry bodies and anyone trying to communicate with farmers and the broader agricultural sector.

Albo urea deal is better than nothing.

Many countries are hunting down urea, so any deal is better than no deal. It is important to note that this agreement equates to 8% of the five year average imports for urea.

Official stats show that Australia has imported around 300k tonnes of urea to the end of February. This is a good start, and the second highest on record for the first two months of the. The problem is that the conflict started at the end of February. The key timing is from April onwards.

The second chart shows the countries where we get the majority of our urea from, and with many from the Middle East facing issues, we need to increase our volumes from our neighbours in Asia.

Episode 3 has always focused on delivering independent, objective market intelligence to the Australian agricultural sector.

As the conflict unfolds, the speed at which global events are impacting fuel, fertiliser and supply chains is only increasing. The impact is drastic for Australian farmers (and the entire supply chain).

That is why we have taken our reporting a step forward. We are now providing live updates, tracking developments as they happen, with a clear focus on what it means for farmers and agribusiness in Australia.
