Want to understand your business books better? Lets start with your business accounts!

As a small business owner, your bank account will not be your single source of information. In fact, good bookkeeping in your business will reflect all financial transactions across the following 5 key areas:

Assets - Cash & Capital kept by the business (this includes your stock, your accounts receivable, cash in bank etc)

Liabilities - Debts & Commitments (loans, accounts payable etc)

Expenses/Expenditure - Cash flow for overhead expenditure like payroll & business running costs e.g power bills

Revenue/Income - Money generated through core business activities (Sales)

Equity - What the values is of the business after all the liabilities have been subtracted from its assets. Your equity in your business will represent the owners 'held interest' in the business. This will include inventory and retained earnings (net profits that a business holds onto to help fund future activities.)
