Seven years ago today our eldest was born and I became a mum.
I had absolutely no idea what was coming.
I knew I would love our baby.
I knew my life would change.
I knew there would be sleepless nights and nappies and tiny clothes and a whole new routine.
What I didn’t know was that I was also becoming someone new.
I didn’t know about matrescence.
I didn’t know that becoming a mother could feel like both an expansion and a loss. That you could be completely in love with your baby and simultaneously grieve parts of the person you had been.
I didn’t know how much my identity would shift.
How my priorities would change.
How my nervous system would change.
How my relationship with my body would change.
How motherhood would stretch parts of me I didn’t know could stretch.
I didn’t know how hard it could be.
The exhaustion.
The uncertainty.
The pressure to get it right.
The opinions.
The invisible mental load.
The moments of wondering where I had gone.
I also didn’t know how incredible the becoming would be.
How motherhood would introduce me to a depth of love I couldn’t have imagined.
How much I would learn about myself.
How fiercely I would advocate.
How much softer I would become in some places and stronger in others.
How my understanding of women, mothers, identity, relationships, bodies and mental health would deepen.
Seven years into my matrescence, I don’t think I am the woman I was before motherhood and I know I am not meant to be.
I am still becoming.
And perhaps that is one of the most beautiful things about motherhood.
Happy 7th Birthday to our eldest 🤍 I will forever be grateful that I get to grow up with you.
