In Memory of Hugh Hamilton AM
You may have heard of the recent passing of the incredible Hugh Hamilton, a founding director of BUSSQ and the former state secretary of the Building Workers Industrial Union (BWIU). As the State Secretary of the BWIU (now CFMEU), Hugh's strategic coordination was instrumental in the battle which eventually brought superannuation benefits to the Queensland construction industry by forming BUSSQ. For Hugh, it wasn't just about ensuring financial security through superannuation; he wanted the best life for people working in the construction industry. His holistic approach looked after the workers on-site, their health, and their superannuation. He understood that a secure retirement was only meaningful if it was accompanied by dignity and well-being throughout a worker's life.
Linda Vickers, BUSSQ Director, fondly remembers Hugh as "a gentleman to work with, a man of vision, passion, and steadfast support for the members". His commitment to BUSSQ Members extended far beyond the office; he actively engaged on-site, meeting members where they work to discuss their superannuation. Hugh's dedication to improving the lives of workers and securing their financial future was a testament to his exceptional character.
Dallas Ezzy, BUSSQ National Relationship Manager and longtime friend of Hugh shared his thoughts on Hugh, "...a man who delivered so much... He truly embodied the spirit of a champion of the working class."
Damian Wills, BUSSQ CEO, shared that Hugh's legacy extended beyond the establishment of BUSSQ; he was integral in the establishment of MATES in Construction, supporting mental health and reducing su***de rates in the industry. Hugh's passion for MATES was palpable, and he relentlessly pursued its implementation, bringing BUSSQ on board in partnership with BERT. MATES was born, driven by his unwavering commitment to improving outcomes for workers' mental well-being.
Today, we pay tribute to Hugh's dedication and vision, which left a lasting impact not only on the construction industry but also on the lives of countless workers and their families. As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary individual, let us honour his memory by continuing the work he was so passionate about. Let us strive to support our fellow workers, build strong communities, and ensure that every worker's life is valued and dignified.
Rest in peace, Hugh Hamilton AM. Your vision and compassion will forever inspire us.
