Late payments are one of the biggest cash flow problems for small businesses in Australia.

In Part 1 of How To Get Paid Faster, we’re looking at one of the most basic reasons payments get delayed: unclear payment expectations before the work starts.

Before you start the job, make sure the client knows:

Payment terms.
Whether a deposit is required.
How they need to pay.
When the invoice will be sent.

That one conversation can save a lot of awkward follow up later.

Follow Sole for more practical tips on invoices, payments, cash flow and small business admin.

The Federal Budget is out. Here are 4 updates small business owners should know in plain English.

The big ones:

The $20,000 instant asset write off is now permanent
Eligible workers may be able to claim up to $1,000 for work related expenses
Eligible working Australians, including sole traders, may get up to $250 taken off their tax bill
The temporary fuel discount ends on 30 June 2026, so fuel costs may go back up from July

These updates may help, but they are only useful if your records are clean.

Keep your receipts.
Track your costs.
Know your numbers.

General information only. Speak with your accountant or registered tax agent before making tax decisions.

Some accounting platforms seem to have mastered the art of raising prices and calling it innovation.

Cute.

But for sole traders and small business owners, value is not about how many features are buried in the dashboard.

It is about whether the software actually helps you run the business.

Sole keeps it simple:

Clear pricing.
Useful features.
Real support.
No paying for a giant system when you only need the bits that matter.

Because your accounting software should make business admin lighter.

Not become another thing you have to complain about.

Switch to Sole. Pay for what you actually need.

Still chasing the same invoice?

Late payment is not always about a difficult client. A lot of the time, it starts with the process. Late invoice sending, vague payment terms, and no follow up rhythm all slow things down.

Invoice as soon as the work is done. Keep your terms clear. Follow up before the due date. Make paying easy.

Fix the process, get paid sooner.

Does ChatGPT know your business exists?

Your next customer might not Google you. They might ask ChatGPT.

If your business is not clearly explained online, AI tools have no reason to mention it. That means your website needs to make the basics obvious: what you do, where you are based, and why someone should choose you.

This is called AEO, or Answer Engine Optimisation.

We have put together a simple guide for small businesses in Australia to help you get started.

Comment **AEO** and we’ll send it through.

You do not need to save all your business admin for the end of the day.
With Sole on your phone, you can get it done in the small moments throughout the day. In the ute before the next job, in the Bunnings car park, at the servo, waiting to pick up the kids, on site in between jobs, in the salon, waiting for a coffee, or on the couch at 7pm.
Send invoices, track expenses, stay on top of your business admin, and spend more of your time on growing your business and living your life.
Sole is an Australian accounting app for sole traders and small business owners.

A tradie with over 10 years experience told me this:
The moment he stopped running everything through one bank account, he finally knew where his money actually was.
That’s the bit a lot of tradies miss.
It’s not always about earning more. Sometimes it’s about being able to see your numbers clearly.
If business and personal spending are mixed together, it gets hard to know what’s profit, what belongs to the ATO, and what you can actually spend.
One separate business account can make a massive difference.
Follow for more practical tradie tips on bookkeeping, cash flow, sole trader tax, invoices, expenses, and small business admin.

If the work keeps growing but the price stays the same, the fix is usually not at the end of the job. It starts at the quote.

Be clear on what’s included, what’s excluded, and what counts as extra. For bigger jobs, break the work into stages instead of leaving it open ended.

Clearer boundaries make the job easier for both sides.
