NEWS: Construction is underway on a next-generation 39-metre passenger ferry Incat Crowther has designed for Singapore’s Majestic Fast Ferry. The new ferry builds on the successful first and second-generation 39-metre ferry platforms Incat Crowther has designed for the same operator.

Optimised performance and weight reduction were key design drivers of the third generation platform, with a new raked bow form and greater use of lightweight materials throughout. The vessel's structure has also been simplified by expanding the use of extruded aluminium sections, helping to reduce the vessel’s weight and streamline build time.

Up to twenty (20) third-generation vessels are expected to be built as part of the project, with construction on the first vessel expected to be complete by 2027. Indonesian shipyard PT Cahaya Samudra is responsible for the build.

Designed to transport 312 passengers, the new vessel is capable of speeds up to 32.5 knots, an improvement on previous 39-metre platforms.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION: In these shots taken at Baku Shipyard, you’ll see construction on one of the three new 42-metre DP2 fast crew boats Incat Crowther has designed for an offshore energy services operator in Azerbaijan.

The bespoke crew boats will be capable of reaching speeds of up to 22 knots and are tailored to pre-existing offshore energy infrastructure in the Caspian Sea.

The next-generation fleet feature a steel hull and superstructure, and are capable of carrying up to 50 service personnel. Each vessel also boasts a large aft deck that can transport up to 20 tonnes of deck cargo.

Each vessel will be fitted with a Walk2Work gangway to maximise operational efficiency and safety.

In this short video, Naval Architect and Project Assurance Manager Michael Storaker explains the benefits that some operators are realising by adopting fully electric or battery hybrid propulsion systems.

Michael explains that while the technology is evolving, Incat Crowther is tailoring the designs of vessels to ensure they not only take advantage of the latest technology, but so they are future proofed for an evolving technological landscape.

This means designing vessels that are operationally efficient and flexible today, while ensuring diesel, future fuels and hybrid vessels can be retrofitted with battery systems in the future if the technology allows.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION: In these photos provided by Marine Group Boat Works you’ll see the aft hull module, mid module and main deck raft of the new low-emission, renewable diesel-powered passenger ferry Incat Crowther has designed for Los Angeles operator Catalina Express.

The new 48-metre (160 foot) passenger ferry will service the popular one-hour tourist route between Los Angeles’ Long Beach Port and Santa Catalina Island.

Capable of transporting up to 516 passengers across three spacious decks at speeds of up to 37 knots, the new vessel will be powered by renewable diesel fuel (R-99) comprised of plant-based stocks.

The new vessel will replace three smaller Tier 2 and Tier 3 ferries with a combined six diesel engines, helping to reduce emissions while maintaining the same passenger capacity within the Catalina Express fleet.

The new ferry will form part of the Port of Los Angeles’ $US31 million Los Angeles Marine Emission Reduction (LA MER) project, funded by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

CASE STUDY: Learn more about Hydromover 2.0 – the new ultra-efficient all-electric light cargo transfer vessel Incat Crowther designed for marinEV, a business of Yinson GreenTech.

In this short video, you’ll see the vessel in action in the Port of Singapore and learn more about the design improvements that have helped to increase Hydromover 2.0’s operational capabilities when compared to its predecessor.

The 24-metre Hydromover 2.0 features an ultra-efficient hull form, a range of 130 nautical miles, a maximum speed of 14 knots, a large 70m² cargo deck and the capability to transport a 30-tonne payload.

In a sign of the success of the vessel’s commercial success, Yinson GreenTech has signed an agreement which will see Hydromover 2.0 vessels operational in the UAE later this year.

In a significant milestone, Mercedes Pinto - the third 123-metre dual-fuel Ro-Pax fast ferry Incat Crowther has designed for Spanish operator Baleària is now servicing routes in the Canary Islands.

In this short video you’ll see Mercedes Pinto in action during sea trials, where the vessel achieved top speeds of 38 knots.

Mercedes Pinto can transport 1,200 passengers and 425 vehicles, and features an iterative design built upon the proven and successful platforms of its sister vessels Eleanor Roosevelt and Margarita Salas. Eleanor Roosevelt has been in operation since 2021, while Margarita Salas has been operational since 2024.

Like other vessels in the fleet, Mercedes Pinto is powered by dual-fuel natural gas engines and is future-proofed for a low and zero-emissions future, with the capability to operate on 100% biomethane or green hydrogen blends of up to 25%.

NEWS: In a major milestone, Norman Selfe and Jack Mundey – the final vessels in a fleet of seven new 24-metre Parramatta Class ferries designed by Incat Crowther for Transport for NSW – are now in service and returning immediate results for the city’s busy ferry network.

In a validation of Incat Crowther’s digital shipbuilding approach, Transport for NSW has reported the new vessels use around 40 per cent less fuel than the previous RiverCats, enabling the operator to add 136 extra ferry services each week on the Parramatta River route.

The design, construction and delivery of the new fleet has seen Incat Crowther deploy its end-to-end digital shipbuilding and quality assurance services. This has included working closely with all stakeholders involved in the design, construction and operation of the new vessels to ensure the fleet has entered service on-time and with stakeholder support.

The new Parramatta Class vessels are capable of transporting 200-passengers and will predominantly run on the busy commuter and tourist route between Parramatta in Sydney’s west and Circular Quay in the city’s C*D.
