6 Years in Business: The Lessons That Stuck
Six years running MWT Financial Solutions has taught me more than any textbook ever could. Some lessons came easy. Most didn't. Here are the three that have shaped me the most.
1. People don't value what they don't pay for
The mortgage broking industry has taught and entrenched this. Because the lender pays the commission, clients have been conditioned to see broking advice as "free".
And the amount of free work that goes on is staggering. Hours of research, scenarios, lender comparisons, policy checks, phone calls and paperwork, often for clients who walk away, never proceed, or take the strategy elsewhere.
Experience brings real value to the table. As an industry, we've done a poor job of showing it.
2. Mind your own business (literally)
This has been the hardest lesson of all.
You need to understand and control every part of your business: your accounting, strategy, marketing, website, systems, platforms and people management. That applies even when you've paid others to help you for their experience and expertise, and even when you trusted them.
Once you sign off on your tax return, the responsibility sits with you, not your accountant. This was a huge lesson learnt. The same goes for your website, your systems and processes, software and your numbers. When something goes wrong, it always lands back on your desk to fix.
The moment you stop minding your own business is the moment you get burnt and taken advantage of the most.
It's bloody hard being across everything. But you have to βmind your own businessβ. Nobody else will.
3. Everyone has an agenda
That's not always a bad thing. But when someone else's agenda starts disturbing your inner peace and goals, you need to have a long hard look at it. Sometimes it's best to cut bait and move on.
The bottom line
Six years in, business has taught me to be ruthless:
β±οΈ Ruthless with time
π€ Ruthless with the people I let in
π― Ruthless about putting what matters most first
What's the biggest lesson business (or life) has taught you?
Drop it in the comments. π
