Over more than a century, the Sainsbury family transformed a Victorian dairy shop into one of Britain’s largest supermarket groups while maintaining unusually strong continuity between ownership, leadership, and family identity.
Eventually, they transitioned away from family management, as changing market conditions exposed the limits of a highly centralised governance structure.
