“It’s amazing to see how much a team can achieve when it doesn’t matter who gets the credit.”
Last Saturday, our company hosted the Alfred Sports Carnival, and it was more than just a sports day. For me, it felt like reliving a childhood dream of being back on the basketball court, chasing that feeling of competition I’ve always loved.
This time, though, I wasn’t just a player. I was chosen to be a team captain. And I quickly realised that leadership on the court isn’t about scoring the most points or chasing MVP. It’s about something far bigger.
It’s making sure your teammates shine. It’s setting up the plays, giving assists, and positioning others where they can succeed. It’s reading the game, spotting weaknesses, and giving direction when it matters most.
Because basketball — just like business — is never won by one person alone. Championships aren’t built on individual effort; they’re built on teamwork, strategy, and trust.
And honestly, the best part wasn’t the scoreboard. It was the camaraderie, the laughter, the shared energy, and the new connections made with colleagues I’d never worked with before. That’s what sticks with me.
Whether on the court or in business, true leadership is about lifting others up, making sure every role is valued, and proving that success is always a team game and effort.
Here’s to more events like this, because the lessons we learn together on the field carry over into how we grow together at work.
